How we are 'structuring' the layout of our News & Information - April 2012

With some four months of using this facility, we have taken stock of what seems to have worked well / proved popular, and what has not.  The first conclusion is that it seems as though members like having the latest information posted on the Home page, so that it is always easily visible.  However, to keep the page not too cluttered and also 'fresh', we have decided to move items that might still be relevant, but have been on the page for a couple of weeks, to a section within here called 'Previous Announcements'.  The set up of the 'Latest Announcements' page was done in a way that allowed RSS / Blog type feeds, and which have turned out to be of great interest to some, but not all - so we have modified the way we are using that page as detailed below.

We had, for a few months prior to this facility being brought on-stream, been producing and emailing a  monthly Newsletter as a way of trying to keep all Members upto date with activities at the Club.  However, with the ability now to update news so much more easily within this site, we have decided to drop the Newsletter as such, but instead to send an 'All member' email every three weeks or so with a very brief resumee of what has been posted on this site, along with an embedded link. By using this approach we hope to ensure every member is aware of all that is going on, without 'cluttering up' your mail boxes unduly.

As always, any feedback on the above, or the degree to which you find this site useful or frustrating, do please let me know via commodore@ardleighsc.co.uk

Latest Announcements

We post here a items that we think will be of interest to those who have signed up for the RSS or Blog feed, with the entries either in their entirety, or as a brief synopsis of what is covered in more detail on the Home page.  Any information on cancelations / restricted access to the Club etc. will always be included here.  For more information about how this works, or how to set up an RSS or Blog feed, please see the section at the end of this page.

Previous Announcements:

This section holds items of news or information, which whilst still relevant in some way, have had their time at 'the top of the list' and so have been moved to here to make way for new material.

What is an RSS feed, do I want to suscribe, and if so how?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Why RSS? Benefits and Reasons for using RSS

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually, and importantly, You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

Subscribing to RSS

It's simple - look for this logo  Blog RSS feed  You'll find it on our "Latest Announcements" page.  Click on the logo and a new screen will appear.  Select the "subcribe to this feed" option, and the link will then be saved in your Internet Explorer "feeds" folder (in "favourites".  To open in the future,  simply select the feed.
